Our Llamas

Llamas are bigger cousins of the Alpaca, and smaller cousins of the camel. A big male can weigh up to 400 pounds and carry 1/3 of their own weight. They are commonly used as heavy pack animals in South America as they are sure-footed, alert, and easy on the ground.

Llamas are also sheared and their fleece can be used to produce a variety of products. Llama fleece isn't as soft as Alpaca, but it is very warm and comes in a wide variety of colors. It is just the right thing for some projects.

At Waugh Mountain the Llamas go hiking and packing with us. When they are home they serve as companion and guard animals for the Alpaca. Llamas will give an alert call any time they sense danger and they have been known to confront and run off a variety of dangerous predators including coyotes.

Our Llamas are a friendly curious bunch who especially like children. If you are interested in a Llama hike, read more about "Lunch with a Llama".

We also breed and sell Llamas. We'll have more about that on this web site soon, but if you are interested in meeting and acquiring a Llama of your own in the meantime, please give us a call!
